Sicily

Sicilian wine has its place in the Ancient Greek and Roman legends, with Bacchus (or Dionysus) described as the God who brought pleasure to mankind, and wine to Sicily. Wine has been made on the island for millennia, with evidence to show cultivated grapes being traded as early as 1500 BC. Nowadays, Sicily is most famous for the production of Marsala, which began in the 18th century and has become one of the isle’s most popular wines. At the Fine Wine Company we have a range of quality Sicilian wines to suit a range of budgets and palates.

In Sicily they utilise a wide range of different grape varietals. The main red grapes include Nero D’Avola, Mascalese, Nerello Mantellato, Perricone and non-indigenous grapes such as Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon. The main white grapes include Cataratto, Grecanico, Grillo, Inzolia, Zibibbo, Damaschino with Chardonnay, Fiano and Viognier recently introduced.

The history of wine in Sicily gives them great pride in what they produce and their range is diverse, with plenty of different styles and flavours.
