Russian River Valley is a sub-region of Sonoma Country and it is a recognised American Viticultural Area, unsurprisingly located around the Russian River. The region is responsible for about 16-17% of the whole wine planting in Sonoma County and it has had AVA status since 1983.

The Russian River Valley is known especially for its bold and flavourful Pinot Noir, although they may many other fantastic reds too. The region is characterised by a cool climate, which is fairly foggy due to its closeness to the Pacific Ocean. Cool climate varietals grow bountifully in Russian River Valley.
