Although there has been a lot of buzz around the thriving British sparkling wine market, this should not come at the cost of overlooking the excellent white wines which are being made in Devon, Dorset, Surrey and Sussex. The Bacchus grape
What has become clear is that wine-makers in Britain are finding particular joy using the Bacchus grape variety. Many of the English Bacchus grape wines have in fact been receiving numerous awards over the last few years. This grape can lead to gorgeously full and vibrant palate, a good acidity level and a nice and light body that can offer a lower abv. It also tends towards a dry or off-dry style. It comes from Germany, having been developed through various crossings in 1933, but it was not till the 1970s that it found its way to Britain. The reason why it has done so well in England - as many of the wines here attest to - is down to the cooler climate keeping the right amount of acidity in play.

But it is not just the Bacchus grape which is on show here in this collection, as you can also go for a number of other grapes such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, to name just a few. Made from 100% Bacchus, a popular variety that ripens well in cool-climates, this vine produces fruit with excellent ripe flavours and refreshing crisp acidity levels. Ripe melon, peach, passion fruit, gooseberry and a hint of cut grass on the nose; the palate shows tropical fruits and lime flavours with hints of nettles.
Bacchus grows beautifully in England, particularly East Anglia where the sunny and dry climate provides perfect conditions, developing wonderful aromas and zippy acidity. Often compared to Sauvignon
Silex (French for Flint) is a blend of Pinot dominant varieties. Fermented and aged in neutral Bugundian oak barrels, this is a rich, complex wine with delicate floral notes and hints of toast and spice. It is drinking well now but can also be cellared for up to 5 years.
Brilliant white gold in the glass with a clean nose of citrus, thyme and pineapple. A lively acidity is balanced by rich, ripe grapefruit, citrus and apple flavours. It is a wine with great length, finishing with saline, herbal notes typical of the Hush Heath style.

Peter Mertes Riesling Kabinett has fresh flavours of apples and pears. Not too sweet and not too dry. A terrific value for an everyday wine that goes with any Asian cuisine or by itself!
The Pinot Gris is off-dry and pale lemon in colour, with aromatic peach and pear fruit alongside the floral character on the nose. On the palate, it has excellent balance with crisp acidity. It is fairly full in body, with plenty of juicy fruit intensity, but is refreshing and long, with a lively citrus and stone fruit finish.
