2019 marks the maiden vintage of Flowergirl Albarin o one of only three wines currently crafted from this Iberian grape varietal in South Africa. Intense aromatics of white peach and pink grapefruit follow through on the vibrant palate. Packed with zesty acidity, the wine refreshes with its juicy nectarine flavors, backed by undercurrents of grapefruit pith, lemongrass and lime zest.
A tight, minerally wine with classic Hamilton Russell Vineyards length and complexity. Unusually prominent pear and lime fruit aromas and flavours are brought beautifully into focus by a tight line of bright natural acid and a long, dry minerality. An elegant, yet textured and intense wine with a strong personality of both place and vintage.
Refreshing aromas and flavours of crisp/fresh tropical fruit, nose with passionfruit and gooseberries and grassy, with a little bit of basil (herbaceousness). Layers of tropical fruit, subliminal figs on the palate. Well structured and balanced.
It is quite possible that South Africa might just be the best place outside of Iberia for Albarino based on this excellent example and the very small production one from Newton Johnson. This is juicy, salty and mineral which brings to mind an ocean breeze for its bracing freshness.
