The 2008 Pieropan ‘La Rocca’ Soave Classico has won the Italian White Wine Trophy at this year's International Wine Challenge. Last year, the 2007 vintage won the Soave trophy at the same competition. This success underlines the quality of the La Rocca vineyard, which is widely regarded as one of the great sites of Soave Classico. The 2008 vintage produced rich wines of great complexity. Scattered showers in spring, followed by a long and dry summer resulted in a long ripening season with the grapes being harvested as late as November. The ripe flavours are balanced by excellent acidity, producing a wine with great minerality and freshness, capable of long-ageing.
Out of 678 entries, the 2010 Spy Valley Pinot Noir won the following trophies at the 2011 International Cool Climate Wine Show:
BEST RED WINE of the Show
BEST PINOT NOIR 2010
BEST ESTATE made and bottled red wine
In what has been described as the strongest field yet, this is a fantastic result for Spy Valley. And right now you can save up to 26% of a case of 6 wines across the Spy Valley range at The Fine Wine Company.
DogFish, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand £6.95
This luscious Sauvignon Blanc combines intense white peach and nectarine aromas with beautiful fresh fruit to provide a full palate and lingering finish.
Marques de Carrion, Solar de Carrion, Rioja, Spain £6.95
Marques de Carrion is in the heart of the Rioja Alta, in the historical town of Briones. Located on a hilltop, overlooking a bend in the River Ebro, vines have been grown here since Roman times. The Bodega has some of the most prestigious vineyards in the area and produces rich, intense wines of great character and finesse.
BEN GLAETZER 2009 VINTAGE, BAROSSA VALLEY, AUSTRALIA
When wine writer Robert Parker awarded Ben Glaetzer’s Amon-Ra Barossa Shiraz a score of 98/100, he confirmed the wine’s place and that of its winemaker amongst the world’s best, including first-growth Clarets meriting similar scores.
Parker’s endorsement followed enthusiastic acclaim from reviewers around the world, including Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson, and James Halliday, as well as a Gold medal at the International Wine Challenge Awards. Ben’s other wines, including Anaperenna and Bishop, have earned similarly spectacular international praise.
All this attention and limited supply mean that older vintages sell for considerably more than their release price (Ben spotted Amon-Ra ’03 in an LA wine shop at $1500 per bottle
As in Bordeaux, 2009 has caused much excitement in Barossa, following the small 2007 and 2008 vintages. Having tasted the wines, we can confirm that they’re truly outstanding – full, rich and velvety, with a natural easiness that will make them irresistible when young yet (theoretically) capable of long ageing.
These wines are extremely limited grab them while you can
Greywacke by Kevin Judd Sauvignon Blanc 2010
Greywacke is the exciting new solo venture of Kevin Judd, who was chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay for 25 vintages and instrumental in the international recognition which New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc enjoys today.
The debut wine under the Greywacke label is the 2010 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which displays the hallmarks of Kevin’s famed style: ripe fruit, fine balance, great concentration and superb varietal intensity. The grapes are primarily sourced from prime, low yielding vineyard sites in and around Marlborough’s Southern (Brancott and Ben Morven) Valleys, and vinified using ‘non-interventionist’ techniques.
The ‘Greywacke’ name derives from the greywacke rock which is prevalent in New Zealand and consists of layers of hard grey sandstone alternating with thinner layers of darker mudstone.
Don't miss out its in short supply
The Fine Wine Company has been awarded Scottish Off Sales of the Year 2010. Thank you for everybody that voted for us.
