Greywacke is the exciting new solo venture of Kevin Judd, who was chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay for 25 vintages and instrumental in the international recognition which New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc enjoys today.
The debut wine under the Greywacke label is the 2009 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which displays the hallmarks of Kevin’s famed style: ripe fruit, fine balance, great concentration and superb varietal intensity. The grapes are primarily sourced from prime, low yielding vineyard sites in and around Marlborough’s Southern (Brancott and Ben Morven) Valleys, and vinified using ‘non-interventionist’ techniques.
The ‘Greywacke’ name derives from the greywacke rock which is prevalent in New Zealand and consists of layers of hard grey sandstone alternating with thinner layers of darker mudstone.
