The Lorenzon family’s 170 hectares of vineyard in the Isonzo DOC zone in south-eastern Friuli are split primarily between two blocks, ‘I Feudi di Romans’ and ‘Borgo dei Vassalli’. ‘I Feudi di Romans’ is situated in the heart of the zone, abutting Vie di Romans. An old apple grove with stony, well-drained soil of glacial origin, it now comprises 60 hectares of vineyard and 15 of apple trees. The infl uence of New Zealander Matt Thomson has been felt in the wines since he started working here in the 1999 vintage. The Pinot Grigio displays lovely aromatics, good depth on the palate and excellent length, while the Sauvignon Blanc has a wonderfully balanced varietal expression, with hints of gooseberries and blackcurrants mingling with stone fruit, all lifted by good acid on the fi nish. The Malvasia, unoaked and minerally, is always one of the best wines when we do the annual tasting at ‘I Feudi’. Though diffi cult to sell, we just could not resist it in 2009, as its pure, scented and waxy fruit is beguilingly drinkable. The 2006 Merlot is equally impressive. It has good colour, ripe plummy fruit with a hint of tobacco, and supple tannins on the palate. It represents remarkable value for money and should be on everyone’s ‘to try’ list, as it outclasses many a pricier Pomerol or St. Emilion.
