Fairview is situated on the lower slopes of Mt. Paarl, and was planted with vines as early as 1699. The property was bought by the grandfather of current owner Charles Back in 1937, and was subsequently run by his father, Cyril and now Charles.
Charles Back never stops forging ahead and has earned Fairview a reputation for consistent quality across a range of innovative styles, using both classic and unusual varieties. Charles embraces 'typicity of terroir' and leads the field in South Africa in matching varietals to specific sites - a surprisingly recent phenomenon in the country. The Fairview estate now has 350 hectares of vineyard over four appellations: Paarl, Stellenbosch, Malmesbury and the Darling Hills.
Charles' Shiraz are Fairview's crowning achievement. His two single vineyard Shiraz, one from the Beacon block in Paarl and the other from the Jakkalsfontein site in the warmer Swartland, are outstanding.
