This 700 hectare estate, situated just to the west of the Ribera del Duero zone, and five km down river from Vega Sicilia, has 210 hectares of vineyard. First planted in 1991, primarily on the northern, stonier and less fertile side of the Duero valley, the vineyards are immaculately tended, comprising 70% Tempranillo, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Syrah and Petit Verdot. The vineyards are run by Angel Anocibar Beloqui, who has been the winemaker since the first vintage in 1996. Pascal Delbeck, who has been involved since the inception, remains a consultant. Angel’s prowess was recognised when he was named as ‘Red Wine Maker of the Year’ at the 2005 International Wine Challenge, following the success of his 2001 Selección Especial, which won the Red Wine Trophy and the Spanish Red Trophy. His success is due to the way in which management of the vineyards is integrated with that of the winery. He has identified 54 separate plots on the estate, and harvests and vinifies each separately. Each lot then provides him with myriad blending options.
